Women's Tennis Continues Strong Play With 6-1 Win Over Oakland

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's tennis team won its seventh-straight match today with its 6-1 defeat over Oakland Sunday afternoon at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center. With the win, the Cardinals improved to 12-2 overall while the Grizzlies fall to 4-7 for the year.
Ball State started the match off strong as all three doubles teams quickly took 1-0 leads on all three courts over Oakland. The Cardinals continued to control each match despite a 3-3 tie at one point at the No. 3 position. First off the court was the No. 1 doubles duo of Julia Sbircea and Rosalinda Calderon. The twosome earned a 6-2 take down over Oakland's Marija Milic and Alexandra Whall. Isabelle Dohanics and Toni Ormond then clinched the doubles point for Ball State after registering a 6-2 victory over Daria Artamonova and Amanda Nilsson on court two. Audrey Berger and Rebecca Herrington took an exciting match as well helping the Cardinals sweep doubles play after beating Allison Motea and Sofia Borcuti, 6-4.
In singles play, Berger and Calderon earned the next two points for Ball State after earning straight set wins on courts four and six respectively. With the Cardinals up 3-0, Ormond earned the match point for Ball State at the No. 3 position defeating Whall by a 6-2 decision in both sets. Peyton Gollhofer continues strong play at the No. 1 slot for the Cardinals. Gollhofer who dropped her first set 6-3 to Motea came from behind to earn the three set thriller, 3-6, 6-4, 10-4. Sbircea would earn the final point for Ball State. She too captured a three set decision over Borcuti on court five.Â
The Ball State women's tennis team will begin its journey for another Mid-American Conference title, as the reigning champions begin league action Friday at Western Michigan. The match over the Broncos is scheduled for a noon first serve and will played at West Hills Athletic Club or outdoors at Sorensen Courts, weather permitting.
