Five Nationally Televised Games Highlight 2018 Ball State Football Schedule
February 22, 2018 | Football
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State football team's 2018 schedule is now set as the Mid-American Conference released the league line-up today. The Cardinals will play three straight home Saturday games in late September and early October and possibly conclude the regular season with four straight games on ESPN2.
Ball State kicks off the season with a home Thursday evening contest against NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) member Central Connecticut State on Aug. 30. This will be the fifth time since 2010 the Cardinals have started the year with a Thursday night game under the lights at Scheumann Stadium.
Back-to-game road games against Notre Dame and Indiana follow the home opener. The Notre Dame game on Sept. 8 will be televised on NBC at 3:30 p.m. Ball State, entering its 94th season competing in football, has never played the Fighting Irish on the gridiron. The Cardinals and Indiana are beginning the first of a three-game series with the Sept. 15 contest. Ball State will host Indiana at Lucas Oil Stadium in 2019 before returning to Bloomington for one more game in 2020.
Family Weekend is slated for Sept. 22 versus Western Kentucky. Ball State then begins league action with two straight home games against Kent State (Sept. 29) and Northern Illinois (Oct. 6). The Cardinals own a 20-7 record versus Kent State, but have not faced the Golden Flashes since 2013.
Following a road trip to Central Michigan on Oct. 13, the Cardinals return home for another Saturday game against Eastern Michigan on Oct. 20. That game will serve as Ball State's 2018 Homecoming. Ball State has averaged nearly 40 points per game in its last six home games versus EMU.
Three of the final four MAC games will be on the road, but all will be broadcast on ESPN2, ESPNU or CBS Sports Network. The Cardinals wind down October with challenging road games at Ohio (Oct. 25) and defending league champion Toledo (Oct. 31).
Ball State's home finale is set for Tuesday, Nov. 13 against Western Michigan and will be televised on ESPN2. The Cardinals wrap up the regular season with the battle for the 'Red Bird Rivalry' trophy at Miami on Tuesday, Nov. 20.
An updated version of the 2018 MAC football schedule will be released in June with kick times and a television schedule for the first three weeks of the regular season. All other game kick times and television will be announced 12 days prior to the scheduled game.
The 22nd Marathon MAC Football Championship game will take place at Ford Field in Detroit on a date still to be determined. This will mark the 15th MAC Football Championship game at Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions, Super Bowl XL and the 2009 NCAA Men's Final Four.
Ball State returns to the football field for spring practice beginning Thursday, March 15. The spring season will wrap up with the annual Spring Game on Saturday, April 14 at 11 a.m.
