Â
With the win, the Cardinals closed play in the three-day tournament with a 4-1 record and improved to 9-3 on the year.
Â
Ball State used a four-run seventh inning to stun tournament host ECU in a 4-1 come-from-behind victory Friday. The Cardinals followed with a seven-run fourth inning in Saturday's 7-2 come-from-behind win over the Pirates.
Â
The Cardinals took it up another notch Sunday, breaking a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the fourth with an eight-run rally on the way to an 11-4 victory.
Â
The Golden Griffins (3-11) opened the game strong, with its top to batters turning bloopers into a double and RBI triple to pull ahead 1-0. A wild pitch later in the inning pushed the score to 2-0.
Â
Ball State cut the lead in half in the bottom of the frame, however, courtesy of a RBI single from senior second baseman Maddy Labrador. Freshman shortstop Hailey Demnianiuk scored on the play after being hit by the first pitch she faced, advancing to second on a wild pitch and moving to third on a passed ball.
Â
The Cardinals went on to tie the score in the bottom of the second thanks to a leadoff home run from senior first baseman Danae King, her first long ball of the season and her first of three hits on the day.
Â
Ball State was not done in the inning, however, as freshman third baseman Stacy Payton followed with her first of three hits in the contest, a double to right field. Two batters later, sophomore left fielder Haley Dominique drove her home with a RBI single up the middle.
Â
The lead was short-lived, however, as Canisius capitalized on a Ball State error to tie the score at 3-3 in the top of the third.
Â
The Golden Griffins looked poised to pull ahead again in the top of the fourth, getting a pair of runners in scoring position with two outs. However, junior reliever Aeshia Miles was able to induce a fly to shallow center field to end the inning.
Â
The Cardinals followed with their second explosive fourth inning in as many days, scoring eight runs on seven hits to pull ahead 11-3.
Â
King started the frame with a single to left-center field and Payton followed with a bunt single to give the Cardinals a pair of base runners. After a fielder's choice got the lead runner at third, Dominique came up with her second RBI hit of the game, a two-run double to right-center field.
Â
After Demnianiuk was hit by a pitch for the third time in the game, sophomore designated player Janae Hogg doubled in two more runs with a laser shot off the 200-foot marker on the left field fence.
Â
Two batters and a wild pitch later, Labrador picked up her second RBI single of the game with a shot off the glove of the jumping Canisius third baseman.
Â
The Cardinals' rally continued with junior catcher Olivia Huffman being hit by a pitch, setting up a RBI single to left from King. Payton drove in Ball State's final two runs of the inning with a double over the head of the Golden Griffins' right fielder.
Â
Canisius would escape the run rule with a leadoff home run in the top of the fifth, but could get no closer as the Cardinals went on to win the game 11-4.
Â
Miles picked up the win in the circle, throwing 2.1 innings and allowing just one hit and an unearned run.
Â
Sophomore Alyssa Rothwell threw the final three innings, limiting the guests on the score board to two hits and a run over the final 3.0 innings. She also struck out a team-high four batters to earn her third save of the weekend and fourth of the season.
Â
Senior pitcher Carolyn Wilmes started the contest for the Cardinals, recording a pair of strikeouts in her 1.2 innings of work. With the two strikeouts, Wilmes raised her career total to 231 which moves her to 10th on Ball State's all-time strikeout list.
Â
Next up for the Ball State softball team will be the team's annual spring break trip which starts March 2-4 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Kissimmee, Florida, with the Citrus Classic II.
Â
First up for the Cardinals in the tournament will be games versus Fordham (Noon) and Robert Morris (2:30 p.m.).
