Good Day for Cardinals with Victory Over Zips

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State baseball team returned to the friendly confines of the Ball Diamond at First Merchants Ballpark Complex on Friday for a Mid-American Conference matchup with Akron. The Cardinals relied on solid defense, eight runs, and 11 hits on the way to an 8-3 victory over the Zips.
Ryan Peltier led the Cardinals with a 3-for-4 game at the plate, including a solo home run. Amir Wright produced a 3-for-5 game and tied for a game-high two RBIs with two runs scored. Trenton Quartermaine and Nick Powell each went 2-for-5 on the day. Powell tied for a game-high two RBIs. Quartermaine tied for the game-high two runs scored.
Cole has reached base safely in nine-straight games, while Quartermaine has reached safely in seven consecutive. Wright has reached safely in 30 of the 31 games this season.
Trennor O'Donnell had an outstanding day as he tied a career high with 10 strikeouts and picked up the win in six innings of work. He improved to 4-2 on the season.
Akron got on the board first in the top of the third on a Jerry Reinhart solo home run to left field.
Peltier answered in the home half of the third with a solo blast off the scoreboard in left center.
Adam Christianson started things off in the bottom of the fifth as he was hit by a pitch. Peltier followed with a single to give the Cardinals runners on first and second with no outs. Justin Conant flew out to center field and advanced the runners to second and third. The Akron center fielder lost the ball as he was trying to throw the ball in from the outfield and allowed Christianson to score. Peltier had third stolen but slid past the bag and was tagged out. Zach Lane drew a seven-pitch walk and then stole second to gain some momentum for BSU. Wright doubled to left center and drove in Lane. Quartermaine reached on an error by the pitcher has he bobbled a ball at first. Powell singled to the outfield and advanced to second on the throw as Wright scored from third. Matthew Rivera drew a seven-pitch walk to load the bases for the Cardinals. Cole reached base safely as the second baseman made an error and allowed Quartermaine to score. Ball State took a 5-1 lead into the top of the sixth.
The Zips closed the gap with two runs on one hit in the top of the seventh. Akron cut the deficit to 5-3.
Peltier collected his third hit of the day as he started the bottom of the eighth off with a single to third base. Conant reached on a fielder's choice as Peltier was out at second, but Conant was able to advance to second on a throwing error by the shortstop. Lane grounded out to third base and allowed Conant to move up to third. Wright tallied his second RBI with a single to center and advanced to second on an error by the center fielder. Quartermaine traded places with Wright as he doubled down the right field line. Powell singled to left field to drive in Quartermaine but was thrown out at second as the third baseman cut off the throw going home. The Cardinals took an 8-3 lead into the top of the ninth.
Mac Ayres came into pitch the ninth for BSU. After the Zips got two runners on, Ayres settled down and struck out the final two batters of the game to secure the 8-3 win for the Cardinals.
Maxwell McKee went 2/3 of an inning in relief and surrendered two earned runs on one hit. Ryan Brown tossed a scoreless 1 1/3 innings with a strikeout. Ayres finished with an inning pitched and two strikeouts.
Reinhart led the Zips with a 2-for-3 game with two RBIs and a home run. Taed Heydinger picked up the loss and fell to 1-6 on the year. Heydinger went 4 2/3 innings with three strikeouts and gave up five runs, two earned, on five hits. Sammy Tortorella went 2 1/3 innings in relief with two strikeouts and scattered just two hits. Joey Herrick added an inning in relief and surrendered three unearned runs on four hits.
With the win, the Cardinals improved to 18-12 overall and 13-2 in MAC play, while the Zips fell to 10-22 overall and 8-13 in the conference. Ball State and Akron return to the Ball Diamond at First Merchants Ballpark Complex on Saturday with a twin bill. First pitch of game one is scheduled for noon.
