Cardinals Outlast Huskies in 9-5 Victory

DEKALB, Ill. – The Ball State baseball team returned to Ralph McKinzie Field for a Sunday afternoon contest with Northern Illinois. CJ Horn led the Cardinals with a 4-for-5 day at the plate as BSU defeated NIU 9-5.
Amir Wright has reached safely in 37 of 38 games on the season, while Trenton Quartermaine extended his streak to 14 games. Horn posted a 4-for-5 game with two runs scored. Ryan Peltier produced a game-high three RBIs with a 2-for-5 day at the plate with a home run, his fifth of the year.
The Cardinals improved to 24-14 overall and 18-4 in Mid-American Conference play, while the Huskies fell to 7-30 overall and 6-15 in league games.
Zach Cole reached base as he was hit by a pitch to start the top of the second for the Cardinals. Peltier launched a two-run homer to left field that put Ball State on the scoreboard first. Horn notched a one-out single to right field to keep things going. Zach Lane followed with a single to center field to give BSU runners on first and second with one out. Both Horn and Lane moved up a base on a wild pitch. Wright drew a walk to load the bases. Quartermaine drove in two runs on a single to right field as Horn and Lane scored. Nick Powell grounded out to second, but Wright was able to score from third for the RBI. The Cardinals took a 5-0 lead into the third.
After two scoreless innings, Cole roped a one-out triple to right center. Peltier drove in Cole on an infield single to third base. Peltier moved into scoring position as he stole second. Justin Conant notched an RBI single up the middle. Conant stole second to move into scoring position. Horn picked up another single, this time to right field, and gave Ball State runners on the corners. Lane set a fly ball to left field that allowed Conant to tag up and score to extend the Cardinal lead. Wright singled to right field and advanced to second has the left fielder tried to throw out Horn at third. Quartermaine walked to load the bases. Powell drove in a run as he was hit by a pitch. Ball State took a 9-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth.
The Huskies got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth on a single by Brandon Jackson. NIU added another run in the bottom of the sixth when it executed a double steal with runners on first and third. Northern Illinois put another run on the board in the bottom of the seventh. The Huskies continued to battle as they added two in the bottom of the ninth, before Sam Klein struck out three-straight batters to end the game. The Cardinals held onto a 9-5 victory.
Ty Johnson moved to 6-2 on the season as he collected the win. He went six innings in the start and struck out three batters. He gave up two earned runs on four hits. Ty Weatherly, Maxwell McKee, and Tyler Ruetschle combined for two innings of relief. Klein notched his seventh save on the year behind one inning of relief with three strikeouts.
Michael Lasiewicz picked up the loss in 4 1/3 innings of work. He surrendered nine earned runs on nine hits and had two strikeouts. Nick Bonk pitched 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief with four strikeouts.
Ball State and Northern Illinois close out the series with a Monday afternoon contest. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. ET first pitch.
