
Softball Earns Friday Split In Velvet Milkman Invite

MURRAY, Ky. - - The Ball State softball team opened play in the Velvet Milkman Invitational with a dominating 10-2 (5) victory over Bellarmine Friday morning at Racers Field.
Unfortunately, the Cardinals (3-4) could not hold on to the momentum in its nightcap, suffering a 4-3 setback to tournament host Murray State.
In the win over the Knights (1-9), Ball State fell behind 2-0 only to rally for 10 unanswered runs to secure the victory. Eight different Cardinals combined for nine hits, including a 2-for-2 effort from senior second baseman Haley Wynn.
Redshirt sophomore McKayla Timmons tallied three RBI in the win, including driving in the first two runs of the game. Ball State also received a two-run double from sophomore third baseman Emma Richards in the fourth, while an RBI single from redshirt senior Jazmyne Armendariz drove in the walk-off run.
The nightcap saw Armendariz open the scoring with an RBI double in the top of the first. Unfortunately, the Racers (5-5) answered with two in the inning and go on to win the game 4-3. Trailing 4-2 after five, the Cardinals drew within one in the sixth and put the tying run on third in the seventh courtesy of a one-out triple from redshirt freshman second baseman McKenna Mulholland.
Mulholland finished the game 3-for-4, while Wynn added two more hits to go 4-for-4 over the doubleheader. In addition, a sac fly from Wynn tied the score in the top of the second.

HIGHLIGHTS
- In the circle, freshman Bridie Murphy picked up her first career win versus Bellarmine, limiting them to four hits and two runs over 5.0 innings of work … She also struck out a career-high seven batters, the most strikeouts in a game for the Cardinals so far this season.
- Redshirt freshman Hayley Urban registered her first career hit in Friday's opener, smashing an RBI double down the left field line in the bottom of the fifth to give Ball State a 9-2 edge … She drew a bases-loaded walk earlier in the game for her first career RBI.
- Freshman Ashlee Lovett also collected her first career hit with an RBI single one batter before Urban's double in the fourth.
- Timmons led the way for the offense with three RBI in the opener, starting with a two-run double in the first to tie the score … She added a sac fly in the fourth to spark Ball State's six-run inning.
- Mulholland posted her first career multi-hit game in the nightcap, going 3-for-4 including her first career triple.
- Overall, the Cardinals smashed 19 hits over the two games, raising its season batting average to .347 … Wynn currently leads the squad at .619.
