Ball State Drops Tough One at Western Michigan

Wright extended his hitting streak to eight games and has reached base safely in 34 of the 35 games this season. Trenton Quartermaine extended his hitting streak to six games and has reached safely in 11 straight. Quartermaine has homered in three of the last four contest. Zach Cole has reached safely in 13-straight games.
After a scoreless two innings, Quartermaine lined a solo home run down the right field line on a 2-1 count to put Ball State on the scoreboard first in the top of the third.
The Broncos tied the game in the bottom of the third. Western Michigan put together a six-run inning in the bottom of the fifth to gain a 7-1 lead.
Wright singled with one out in the top of the seventh to get things started for the Cardinals. Nick Powell singled to the second baseman and gave BSU runners on first and second with two outs. Hunter Dobbins recorded an RBI single to center field, which drove in Wright from second. The Cardinals cut the deficit to 7-2.
WMU added seven runs, including a walk-off home run as the Broncos forced the run rule and won the contest 14-2.
Ty Weatherly picked up the loss in the start and fell to 0-3 on the season. He struck out six batters and gave up three runs, two earned, on three hits. Ball State used seven pitchers in relief that gave up 11 runs on six hits and walked seven with four strikeouts.
Joe Shapiro picked up the win for Western Michigan in 3 2/3 innings of relief. He struck out three batters and surrendered just one earned run.
The Cardinals are scheduled to make a trip to DeKalb, Illinois, for a four-game series with the Huskies of Northern Illinois beginning on Friday, April 22. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
