Men's Basketball Opens Holiday Invitational With 65-48 Win
November 28, 2006 | Men's Basketball
A strong second half from the Ball State University men's basketball team earned them the 65-48 victory over Prairie View A&M on Sunday afternoon in Worthen Arena.
Sunday's game marked BSU's first contest in the 2006 Las Vegas Holiday Invitational. The Cardinals and first-year head coach Ronny Thompson improve to 2-0 on the season.
The 2-0 start is the second straight season and the fourth time in the last six seasons the Cardinals have opened a year with two straight wins.
"I told our guys that our defense isn't going to start right off the bat," said Thompson. "We took to many jump shots in the first half. We started to drive in the second half and I think it was a combination of them getting tired and us playing better defense."
The Cardinals' Micah Rollin started the second half with a dunk at the 19:41 mark. Rollin's jumper with 16:43 left in the game sparked a 15-0 run for Ball State. The run gave BSU a 47-33 advantage over the Panthers.
D'Andre Peyton dished the ball to Jalon Perryman for a tenacious dunk that led the crowd to their feet at the 8:05 mark. Perryman's dunk resulted in the biggest lead of the game for the Cardinals, 53-35.
Anthony Newell's trey with just 11 seconds left in the game nailed down the Cardinals' 65-48 victory.
Steve Horton, Peyton and Perryman paced the Cardinals with 13 points each, while Newell scored in double figures with 10 points.
Horton also had five assists and two steals. In BSU's first two games of the season, Horton has handed out 11 assists with just two turnovers.
Defensively Ball State was led by Rashaun McLemore who pulled down seven boards. Perryman added six rebounds, while Newell grabbed five.
Ball State continues action at home on Tuesday (Nov. 21) against Chattanooga. Tip is set for 7 pm in Worthen Arena.
Tuesday's game is "Indianapolis Colts Night" as Colts mascot "Blue" will entertain fans before and during the game, while Colts' staff will have free giveaways and prizes -- including a chance to win tickets to the Nov. 26 Indianapolis vs. Philadelphia game at the RCA Dome.
