Bars Squad Leads Gymnastics at Denver Black Out Quad

DENVER - - Battling some of the nation's top programs, the Ball State gymnastics team used a season-best bars rotation to place third among the four-team field at the Denver Black Out Quad Meet.
The Cardinals (11-5) scored a 49.100 in its final rotation on bars, led by sophomore Ashley Szymanski who registered her fifth score of 9.875 of the season on the apparatus. It was Ball State's top individual score of the day and helped tie for fifth among the field of 24 gymnasts.
The effort helped the Cardinals move into third place overall with a team score of 194.950, moving past a solid Texas Women's University squad which finished the day with a score of 194.200. Host Denver, the No. 21 team in the Week 6 RoadToNationals.com rankings, won the meet with a score of 197.125, also toping No. 10 Oregon State which earn a 196.950.
Also shining on bars for the Cardinals were junior Zoe Middleton and senior Grace Sumner, with each earning a season-best 9.850.
Along with its season-best bars performance, the Cardinals tied their season-best team mark on vault with a 48.825. Leading the way were 9.775s from senior Carissa Martinez, sophomore Lindsay Girard and Middleton.
Szymanski and sophomore Delaney McMahon also helped the Cardinals turn it is second-best beam score of the season, each recording 9.825s. McMahon's effort tied her career high.
Overall, the Cardinals recorded five scores of 9.800-or-higher on the day.
Rotation 1: Beam (48.850)
- Ball State turned in its second-best beam rotation of the season, led by 9.825s from McMahon and Szymanski, with McMahon's effort tying her career high.
- Middleton was next for the Cardinals, earning a 9.775.
- Ball State also counted a 9.725 from Sumner and a 9.700 from sophomore Lindsay Fuller.
Rotation 2: Floor (48.175)
- Martinez opened the rotation with a team-high 9.725.
- Middleton and sophomore Ava Molina added 9.675s
- The Cardinals also counted a 9.575 from Girard and a 9.525 from senior Cai Afalla.
Rotation 3: Vault (48.825)
- The Cardinals tied its season-best vault score led by 9.775s from Martinez, Girard and Middleton
- Graduate student Suki Pfister and freshman Karli Mercer were not far behind, each scoring 9.750, with Mercer's effort being a career-best.
Rotation 4: Bars (49.100)
- Ball State ended the meet with its best bars rotation of the season, earning a 49.100.
- Szymanski led the way once again, earning her fifth 9.875 of the season to tie for fifth overall
- Middleton and Sumner each followed with season-best scores of 9.850.
- Ball State also counted a 9.775 from junior Mary Rose Bellan and a 9.750 from freshman Jordanna Phillis
All-Around
- Middleton took third overall in the all-around with her score of 39.075 … The effort included a 9.850 on bars, 9.775s on vault and beam, and a 9.675 on floor
