
Driscoll, Langerak Fire 72s To Open Boilermaker Classic

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's golf team picked up right where it left off last season, turning in a pair of rounds under its program record stroke average of 301.66 Monday afternoon to open play in the two-day Boilermaker Classic.

The Cardinals started with an opening-round +11 (299), which tied as the lowest round in program history at the 6,299-yard, 72-par Kampen-Cosler Course at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Ball State then went lower in the second round, firing a +8 (296) to finish the first 36 holes of the 54-hole event in sixth place among the 14-team field at +19 (595). In addition to being its best round ever at Purdue's home course, the effort was four strokes better than the host Boilermakers in the second round.

"I am really proud of the way we competed and how we executed today," head coach Cameron Andry said. "Kampen-Cosler is a very challenging course that requires a high level of focus, discipline, and execution. We did all of those things really well today."

In fact, Ball State's +8 (296) in the second round was better than nine other teams in the round and was the 11th-best overall round on the day. Overall, Ole Miss leads the field at +2 (578), while Indiana (+4; 580), Xavier (+7; 583), Kent State (+10; 586) and Purdue (+13; 589) round out the top five teams.

Leading the way for the Cardinals Monday was Jasmine Driscoll who is currently tied for 16th among the 81-player field with a score of +3 (147). She started her senior season with an even-par round of 72 and followed with a +3 (75) in her second tour of the course.Â

Driscoll's effort included a pair of birdies in each round, along with 25 total pars which is tied as the sixth-most among the talented field. Driscoll is currently two strokes out of the top 10 and eight strokes back of tournament leader Isabel Brozena of Xavier who finished the day at -5 (139).

Fifth-year senior Sabrina Langerak turned in Ball State's lowest second-round score, matching Driscoll's mark in the opening 18 with an even-par 72 of her own. Throw in an opening-round score of +4 (76) and Langerak is currently tied for 21st overall at +4 (148).

In addition, Langerak started her season with four birdies in each round and is currently tied for fifth among the field with eight total birdies.

Overall, all five Ball State golfers contributed at least one countable round Monday.

"Jasmine and Sabrina both gave us great rounds of even par, and everybody contributed with solid rounds," Andry exclaimed.

Junior JJ Gregston finished the day tied for 25th at +5 (149), starting the day with a +3 (75) and following with a +2 (74). She is tied for 20th overall with 23 pars and carded four total birdies, with three coming in the second round.

Senior Sarah Gallagher was able to contribute an opening-round +4 (76) and is tied for 49th overall at +10 (154). She is also tied for 20th among the field with 20 holes played at par.

Sophomore Sophie Korthuijs closed the day with a second-round score of +3 (75) to finish the day tied for 33rd at +8 (152). Her second tour of the course included four birdies.

Overall, the Ball State women's golf team ranked second among the 14-team field on the par 3s with a with 3.05 (+2) average. The Cardinals were also third on the course's par 5s at 5.03 (+1). Ball State's golfers also finished the day with 23 total birdies and 110 pars which ranked seventh and sixth, respectively among the field.

The final round of the Boilermaker Classic begins at 9 a.m. Tuesday, with the Cardinals starting on holes 4-7.
