
MVB Wins Match One in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Ball State held off Queens in a 3-2 (27-25, 25-17, 25-15, 32-30, 15-12) battle on the road Thursday night in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The Cardinals (15-8; 7-3 MIVA) had a slow start to the first, allowing the Royals (10-12, 2-7) MIVA) to take an early lead. Trailing 5-7, the Cardinals found their footing and took off on a six-point run, causing Queens to call a timeout. Coming out of the timeout, Ball State led 11-7; however, the Royals were able to chip away into the later points, eventually tying the score at 20-20. Completing the comeback in extra points, Queens won the first frame 27-25.
Scores remained close through the start of the second frame as neither team was able to build enough momentum to quickly pull ahead. Going into the media timeout, Ball State led the Royals by three at 15-12. A block assist from Vanis Buckholz and Patrick Rogers at 19-14 gave the Cardinals the biggest lead of the set. Holding on to the advantage, Ball State closed the second frame at 25-17, tying the match at one set apiece.
Ball State settled into the third set, comfortably leading the Royals 15-9 at the media timeout. Holding off Queens' efforts, the Cardinals secured set three on a four-point run that ended with a 25-15 ace from Rogers.
Down two sets to one, the Royals came into the fourth frame with a vengeance. The two teams went back and forth through the entirety of set four, totaling 25 ties and five lead changes. Ultimately, Queens was able to stun the Cardinals with a 32-30 clinch of the fourth set.
Ball State took the first lead of the final set at 2-0, but the Royals were able to quickly even the match at 2-2. In another close set, Ball State was able to pull off the victory after a block assist from Buckholz and Ryan Louis gave the Cardinals a 15-12 set five advantage.
Rogers directed the Cardinals' offense, tallying 22 kills on the night at a .364 (22-6-44) clip. Behind the line, he added two aces and at the net Rogers was able to tack on two block solos and a block assist.
Three other Cardinals recorded double-digit kills, including Louis with 13, Tinaishe Ndavazocheva with 12 and Braydon Savitski-Lynde with 11.
Savitski-Lynde led the team in blocks with a total of four block assists. Buckholz was also an asset at the net with three block assists.
Assisting the Cardinals' offense was Peter Zurawski. Zurawski recorded an impressive new personal best in assists after adding 60 on the night.
As a team, Ball State hit at a .384 (146-72-16) percentage while holding Queens to .280 (150-63-21). The Cardinals also outnumbered the Royals at the net, recording nine blocks in comparison to Queens' six.
Though the Cardinals were able to add an impressive eight aces at the line and minimize the Royals to three, it was the 18 errors that held Ball State back at the service line.
Ball State will face the Royals once more before returning to Muncie for next week's homestand. Match two will take place this Saturday, Mar. 22 for a 2 p.m. ET first serve in Charlotte.
